THE CARD’S STORY BY: PIERRE CARLES

In 2018, the card meaning echoes the fate of refugees from Syria hoping to find a safer life. I chose to depict a mother and child in traditional Syrian clothes. The figure who punts the boat across the sea is an Amesha Spenta, a benevolent spiritual being similar to a Guardian Angel in the Zoroastrian religion (the dominant religion in Palmyra, Syria, when it was a central economic and cultural center, more than two thousand years ago). This reference is also underlined by the mother’s pendant, representing the traditional symbol of a winged archer placed on top of a circle representing the sun.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Harried and weary from the wars and conflicts of others, a mother and her child sail to new lands. They have nothing, but a couple of meager trinkets from their previous lives. But they do have hope, an Amesha Spenta guiding them to calmer waters. You’ve been barely keeping your head above water recently, but gradually, things are getting better, spiritually and mentally. You may not see the end just yet, but it is time for you to let hope grow within you, as you move on from the hard times and despair. The grey clouds are lifting, and it’s time to let go, putting your faith in the Universe to bring you to a more positive place.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

AMESHA SPENTA Amesha Spenta are benevolent divine beings within the Zoroastrian religion, created for Ahura Mazda to act as a conduit to him, each embodying a diff erent positive aspect of his personality. They functioned as channels for communication, and as examples of behaviour for mortals as they performed beneficial deeds and governed further. Th e way in which these beings bestowed good deeds upon others, made them an ideal guide for the travellers within this card.

Card of the Day – The Hierophant – Sunday, May 26, 2019

Posted on Updated on

This is always a great Sunday card; it represents your spiritual beliefs. The Hierophant includes religion, churches, and even the hierarchy, especially in the context of conformity.

What I like more about the Hierophant card for today is its representation of the status quo in relation to where you are on your journey. Things are not going to change in your life unless you choose to change them. Doing, not hoping and dreaming, are what will make things different. Remember, if you keep on doing what you are doing, you will Moon getting what you are getting. Dare to challenge the same old, same old and create a new reality for yourself.

See you here tomorrow!

THE CARD’S STORY BY: DEANNA BACH

Oya seemed a natural fit, a strong, fascinating deity. I felt connected to her and loved painting her. I included a storm cloud sky with wind blowing trees, Oya’s hair and dress. There are birds in the sky which represent higher thoughts and matters of the spirit. Oya’s Niger River is in the background. The lightning indicates the energy, passion and the mentally restless nature of the card. The colours I used are associated with Oya, as are the butterflies and eggplant patterns on her dress and the buffalo horns on her head. Oya is often shown with her curved sword so that also worked well for this card.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Sword raised, Oya is waiting, poised for action. Full of energy and intent, lightning flashes from her eyes, elements within responding to the storm behind her. You’re eager to prove yourself – to show what you’ve learned, and act on your ideas. Even if you run into obstacles and challenges along the way. You can find ways to overcome them practically, “on the job”, rather than planning everything to the last detail. Just make sure you don’t forget to learn as you go. Don’t take short cuts in your haste, and regret it. The Page of Swords can represent a person who is due to bring you chances to exercise your brain and face the challenges before you with logic and analysis, expanding your mental horizons.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: OYA

Oya is a fierce and powerful deity of the Yoruba religion, Orisha of tempests, lightning and storms – in particular the strong winds that are whipped up as a storm rises. She is a force of nature, pushing on in her need for action, regardless of what may lie before her…it can bend to her will, or be destroyed by her winds…either way, it won’t resist the change she brings for long. With air being such an important part of her mythology, and with her impulsive nature, she makes a dynamic Page of Swords

Card of the Day – 10 of Swords – Saturday, May 25, 2019

Posted on Updated on

Things are on the upswing today. This beautiful card reminds us that eventually that caterpillar gets its wings and transforms into a butterfly. Indeed, the recovery process which we have been discussing in recent months is well and truly underway.

All too often, people tend to view the 10 of Swords in a negative, stressful light, when, in fact, it is a reminder that hat goes down will rise up once again. Consider this the dawn of a new day, one where you can finally feel that you are putting the last seven years behind you. It may be a small light appearing, but soon, very soon, the new you will emerge for all to see.

See you here tomorrow!

THE CARD’S STORY BY: RAVYNNE PHELAN

Longmu was born in 290BC in China near the Xi River. One day she found a smooth white stone. It was a dragon egg from which five dragons hatched. She loved her hatchlings, nurturing them until they grew into large dragons who all loved her in return. They helped her and her people by hunting fish, and creating rain to end a drought. Over time, stories of Longmu and her dragons reached the ears of the Emperor, who summoned her to court. But by then, Longmu was old and frail. The dragons knew the journey would kill her, and so they kept her in the village, protecting her until her death.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Longmu sits, surrounded by her beloved dragons, tending to a magical egg. She has raised these elemental creatures, giving them the best while she made do. But now they surround her, protecting her as she rests. Embrace your nurturing instincts and take care of yourself, and others. Spend some time doing what you love today, and let it recharge you. Reconnect with nature, take a long walk with loved ones, sharing your joy. Indulge yourself, and treat those you love, just ‘cos. Let go, if only a little. Your energies are spent on others before yourself. It’s time for self-care – let everyone take care of themselves, and take some “me” time. Indulge yourself, find a way to spoil yourself and enjoy some of the finer things in life.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

LONGMU In Chinese mythology, Longmu’s (Lung Mo’s) dedication and devotion earned her posthumous deification. She found an egg, from which hatched five dragons – whom she fed and tended, caring for them more than herself. Her dragons saved her village during a drought, earning a summons from the Emperor. Despite her age and frailty, she travelled to meet the Emperor aft er his summons, but her dragons pulled her back to keep her safe. Th e giving, almost sacrificial devotion of Longmu made her a truly Mythical Empress!
