Artist Interpretation

A woman in a blue dress holds two jugs and pours water from one to the other. Behind her, the wall with Babylonian bas-reliefs, and an open door through which the garden is visible. She is Ninkarrak (later Gula) who helped breathe life back into humankind after the Great Flood.

Ninkarrak was worshipped as a Babylonian mother goddess of creativity, with the power to inflict and cure disease. Carrying the titles of “great physician,” “herb grower,” “the lady who makes the broken up whole again,” and “creates life in the land” she plays a specially remarkable role in incantation rituals intended to heal. However, she also induced storms and made earthquakes. Besides, Ninkarrak had power to curse those who did something wrong.
