Featured Card of the Day – Ace of Pentacles – 78 Tarot Mythical

Keywords

Opportunities, practicality, new beginnings

Element

Earth

Astrological Association

Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

THE CARD’S STORY BY: MARY LAYTON

When I began researching the Ace of Pentacles, my first instinct was to have a Goddess delivering the Pentacle from the heavens, but as I thought more on the card’s theme of manifestation and how that can be a very personal I felt that the hand of (or a full) goddess might be superfluous. The theme of new beginnings nudged me towards butterflies, so I looked for butterfly myths and stumbled upon the Irish blessing “May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun, and find your shoulder to light on To bring you luck, happiness and riches today, tomorrow and beyond.” and the idea of that etched on a standing stone in a garden full of butterflies began to coalesce into the image I created for the Ace of Pentacles.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

An ancient stone circle stands amongst an idyllic glade, having watched its formation and growth throughout the centuries, above it a butterfly rests on a golden pentacle. This is a time for measured, grounded behavior that helps existing seeds to grow to fruition. A time to roll up your sleeves and take a practical approach to the possibilities opening up before you. Don’t rush in without thinking, expecting success to just jump into your lap. It’s not going to happen. You need to stay focused, make a plan and help your success grow, carefully, with lots of hard work!

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: STANDING STONES

Standing stones of many shapes and configurations cover the world. Whilst there are many in mainland Europe, they can also be found in the Americas, African and the middle-east. Th ere are many theories as to the original purpose of these megalithic structures, from Druidic worship to burial sites, to ancient calendars. What is certain, is that throughout history these monoliths have held a place in the hearts of the people that dwell alongside them. As the stones have witnessed the growth of the land upon which they stand throughout the ages, we felt that this embodied the idea of growth and wealth within this card.

THE CARD’S STORY BY: NATASJA VAN GESTEL

To me, he is like a teenager, giving all when infatuated with something, but also fickle. He’s a rebel, always exploring boundaries; he loves and mourns what he can’t have with an incredibly consuming energy. This card drew some striking parallels with my own life while working on it. I chose Xochipilli, Aztec god of song, dance and love. He promotes love across all genders, which drew me to him; what other god could represent the Knight’s open nature?

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Xochipilli stands, wishing, loving, and yearning. Love is torture, love is life, love is everything. There is so much beauty and sensuality round him, he wants to dive straight in, but where to start? Forget practicality and sensibility, if only for a while. Let yourself get swept up in the moment and dive into your emotions, look at the world with an open heart and embrace that moment when its beauty moves you to tears. See beyond the mundane, the tragedies and responsibilities that make your soul grey, and give your heart the reins! The Knight of Cups can represent a sensitive, imaginative person in your life. Romantic, charming and sometimes dramatic, they bring a world of possibilities with them, a chance to walk a different path for a time.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: XOCHIPILLI

Xochipilli was known as the prince of flowers in Aztec, or Mesoamerican mythology, a god of the arts, of beauty and dance, games and song – of joyful, creative ways to celebrate life! A youthful character, legends tell of a fondness for mind-altering substances…in so many ways, Xochipilli was the first flower child. As an inclusive, free-spirit who seems to have been in love with love itself, he makes a perfect Knight of Cups!

Featured Card of the Day – 2 of Swords – 78 Tarot Mythical

Decisions, stalemate, avoidance, balance

Element

Air

Astrological Association

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

THE CARD’S STORY BY: KYLEN BAIER

For the Two of Swords I have chosen the werewolf – the idea behind this is that there is an internal conflict between man and wolf. Th e woman is a new werewolf and hasn’t come to accept what she is and move forward by embracing her wolf side. She hides behind a blindfold and avoids the conflict. Instead it creates more conflict as the human and wolf cannot come together. Th e crossing swords belong to her two sides and they must find a balance. Th is card resonated with me as I frequently procrastinate and avoid difficult decisions because I am avoiding conflict or possible consequences to my decisions, but my avoidance always ends up making the situation worse rather than better.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

In a field of calming chamomile, a werewolf stands, poised and ready to take a step forward. But the way is blocked by two crossed swords, one belonging to each of its two forms. Not held or wielded in aggression, but still, ever present. For now, the werewolf is trapped. It may seem like putting this off is helping. You may even have managed to create some peace and quiet for yourself by doing so. But it’s not really working. It’s a temporary solution at best, but what is more likely is that you’re actually making things worse for yourself in the long run. You need to stop avoiding the issue. Instead, try taking a long, honest, hard look at the situation, and let the facts of the matter present themselves. Th en make a firm decision, and act on it!

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: WEREWOLF

The myth of the werewolf can be traced back as far as the tales of the hero Gilgamesh, and again in the ancient Greek tale of Lycaon, who angered Zeus and was turned into a wolf along with his sons. By day the creature lives as a mortal, but under the light of the full moon, they transform into a wild creature. A mixture of both human and wolf, they prowl the land looking for prey upon which to feed. Th e dual nature of this creature, living in both the world of the human and monstrous creates a truly mythical Two of Swords.

Card Meaning

The defeated, broken crow lays on the ground at the bottom of a cliff surrounded by cold, barren rocks. Alone in his misery, this poor bird has been left for dead, impaled by ten swords. His is a death marked by the heaviness of betrayal. The Ten of Swords brings an energy of loss and could indicate being back stabbed, and may denote the end of a painful situation. If there is one positive aspect to this card, it is that the time of suffering will soon be over. This card asks that you let go and accept that an end is coming; by doing so you will find the strength to move on.

THE CARD’S STORY BY: PIYA WANNACHAIWONG

I chose Persephone for this Tarot Deck because I’ve seen many depictions of her as a young, innocent and pure girl and I wanted to show her in a new light: older, powerful but bitter to her fate as a reluctant ruler of the Underworld. She is coming back to Hades on her own, standing tall and proud despite the loss of agency in her life. She towers over Charon, who in this painting, has come up with an innovative and labor saving solution to rowing across the River Styx. Persephone’s appearance reflects her dual role as Queen of the Underworld, with half her face a visage of death, and as goddess of spring and vegetation, whose power is so potent and non-discriminating that the wood from Charon’s boat springs to new life.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Persephone is travelling across the River Styx. The deal for her time was struck between her mother and the god of the dead, but she has taken control of her own destiny, taken on characteristics of both her realms and nothing can stop her. Eyes on the prize! Don’t let doubt stop you, don’t show any fear, and don’t let anyone’s dissent dull your energies. Instead, keep your focus steady and your energy high. Face negativity by ramping up your determination and your confidence, knowing within your heart that nothing can slow you down, that you have all the skills you need, and more!

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: PERSEPHONE

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, abducted by Hades. Her mother made the living world barren until her return. Zeus agreed, provided she had not eaten in Hades, but she had…six pomegranate seeds. In the end a compromise was struck, and she spent six months with her mother above ground, six months in Hades, and she became the Queen of the Underworld. Th e way she takes charge of her own destiny, despite the choices made for her by those in power, we felt that she would make a driven Charioteer!

Featured Card of the Day – King of Cups – 78 Tarot Mythical

Astrological Association

Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

THE CARD’S STORY BY: POUL DOHLE

The King sits on a stony throne in the midst of churning waves. In his left hand the chalice of feelings, in his right the scepter of power. This chalice and scepter in union represents discipline and control. I chose the troll because it suits the King of the Cups with a gigantic appearance and his meek expression – the troll is like a stony island in the sea of emotions, his inner strength and the belief in this his way. A true haven of peace.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

In a murky, turbulent sea, the King of Cups is at repose on an ancient throne of rock. He is the calm in the storm, a point of serenity in a world of commotion as he as he patiently drinks his fill. You know you don’t need to ignore emotion in favor of logic. You can easily connect to your feelings, employ them as a tool, a way to help you navigate the world as a compassionate human being, rather than a distant automaton. You may not be able to exert control at all times, but you have the strength of will, and mind, to stay calm in the face of any crisis that may arise. The King of Cups represents a wise, understanding figure, a natural adviser and mentor, who is equally comfortable pulling no punches as he is when being a shoulder to lean on. Inspiring you and driving you to be more compassionate and tolerant.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: TROLL

Trolls are fantastical beings that appear in both Scandinavian and Norwegian folklore. Depending on the legend, they range from small creatures, to giant, cruel and vicious monsters. Norwegian huldrefolk are so similar to humans that they are nearly indiscernible as mythological creatures, but Scandinavian Jøtunn share their name with giants for a very simple reason. They are sometime portrayed as slow, sometimes gentle creature and in several tales they are depicted as calm figures with an affinity for stone, so they seemed like ideal characters for the King of Cups on his rocky throne in the sea.
