THE CARD’S STORY BY: JASMINE BECKET-GRIFFITH

Each card incorporates well-known gods/goddesses/ mythological figures – and since I have The Moon I want to evoke Luna/Selene in my piece. We are also supposed to reference traditional tarot imagery so our cards are recognizable to readers, and I’m incorporating a couple of wolves/dogs and the two pillars (as well as the crawdad) from the Rider-Waite deck, and as a nod to the early Flemish Tarot I’m giving the female figure a distaff (as in spinning wool) in her hand. I’m very excited at the unusual lighting source in this piece, with Luna/Selene being somewhat backlit with the beautiful crescent moon, and have worked out some dynamic shadows & highlights along with the colour scheme.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Selene stands before the moon, flickering fireflies floating around her. Behind lie shadows, two wolves snarling at each other across a river, and a crawdad crawling out of the river onto the bank. In the darkness, the simplest things can cast fearful shadows, a branch appearing as a skeletal hand, and it is then that you need to listen to your heart, when your senses can deceive. Listen now, to your intuition. Pay attention to that nagging feeling, telling you that something is not quite right. Things are going on that you’re not aware of, and it’s time to make sure you’re in possession of all the facts. It’s a good time to check that motives and intentions are true before you act.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

SELENE Selene is the personification of the Moon in Greek mythology, her Roman counterpart being Luna. Also the primary goddess of the Moon, she is known for driving a moon chariot across the galaxy and heavens, for being surrounded by stars and guiding her chariot through the night. With a skill for seeing through the darkness, and the feminine energy combined with the moon, Selene is an ideal characterisation of our Mythical Moon.

Featured Card of the Day – Queen of Cups – 78 Tarot Mythical

THE CARD’S STORY BY: LEA BAROZZI

For my card, I picked Vellamo, goddess of water from Finnish mythology. We are a family of surfers and Ocean lovers, so I love reading all the mythologies from different cultures that are about the Sea. I chose Vellamo because as the goddess of lakes and in particular the seas, she controls the waves, which is perfect for surfers, and I thought that would be a good fit for the Queen of Cups. She is a beauty, tall and slender, and often illustrated wearing a blue dress of seafoam, much beloved by fishermen, who ask her for luck and help.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Vellamo sits in her underwater grotto, the sea life forming her throne, her decoration, even her outfit. In her hands she holds aloft a sea shell – her own mini ocean, as she decides what she will do with the sea today. It is enough to listen to your emotions, to let them educate and inform you – you do not need to be ruled by them. In your daily life, show compassion, understanding that everyone is dealing with their own challenges and trials, and that you can either add to them, or help. Appreciate every moment with people who matter, listening and supporting those you love, nurturing those. The Queen of Cups can signify a sensitive figure in your life, that person who walks into a room and can be the soothing waters in a fraught situation. Always calm and unflappable, they forgive and accept everyone.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

VELLAMO Vellamo is named for the motion of water, like waves on the sea. She is a goddess within Finnish mythology, patron to fishermen, because she controls both the sea and storms – the manner of their livelihood. She and her husband, Ahti were said to live in an underwater court, and everything that was below the water was within their kingdom. Her secure emotional state, plus her association with water means that she is the ideal Queen of Cups for our mythical deck.

Featured Card of the Day – Knight of Wands – 78 Tarot Mythical

Astrological Association

THE CARD’S STORY BY: STANLEY MORRISON

I decided to use the myth of a fiery salamander for what the knight would be riding. The myth states that the salamander enjoyed being in a fire and that their voices pop and hiss out of sparks as they perform ceremonial dances within the flames. I thought that was perfect for the fire associated with the card and to show the action of rushing forward. I tried to incorporate as much of the colors of fire against the desert sky as I could.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Wand in hand, the Knight charges in on his trusty steed – a blazing salamander, the physical manifestation of his passion and fire. All obstacles before him will simply be burned away as he rides through them. Be bold and let nothing hold you back. Change it up a bit, and go with a novel approach. Think it through, but don’t get so bogged down making plans that you lose the chance to act. Let your passion guide you, but take care that confidence doesn’t turn to arrogance, that enthusiasm doesn’t turn into frustration at the first hurdle – reign in your temper. The Knight of Wands can represent an imaginative figure, charismatic and adventurous, but a little tempestuous. They’re magnetic – we’re all just moths to a flame with them. So enjoy yourself, but don’t get burnt!

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: SALAMANDER

While there are similarities between the mythical salamander and the real animal, the fabled amphibian is a far grander creature. Legends spring up of his antics from ancient Roman times to Medieval European bestiaries and tales. They ran the gamut from sensible (a lizard who would withstand fi re) to the incredible suggestions of satyr like animals, dragons or winged hounds. Th ere is a common thread, however – an elemental infinity with fi re, which instantly suggests parallels to this card.
