Featured Card of the Day – Page of Wands – 78 Tarot Carnival ~ Cirque du Tarot

Keywords

Originality, haste, creativity, passion, enthusiasm

Artist Statement

“I pulled the colors directly off of the actual Page of Wands card. The original Page was wearing a blue hat with a red feather. I wouldn’t have chosen that palette myself as I really dislike oranges and yellows. I am a very rough sketcher and refine my process as I paint because it is digital and I have the freedom to do that.”

Card Meaning

In the foreground is a finely attired young rabbit, behind him on a barren, sandy landscape, circus tents stand in the distance. He stands easily on a balancing ball, adorned with a salamander who represents transformation and fire. The rabbit gazes at the wand in his hand passionately and speaks to it of the future, telling it of his dreams in the hopes that the wand might magically make them come true. He hopes to create his own path, and thinks of it with enthusiasm rather than fear, for while it is unknown, it has all the potential to be something grand.

This card personifies the dreams of youth, full of potential and energy. A tenacious desire is making you restless, urging you to follow your heart, begin a new creative project, and see where it leads.

Featured Card of the Day – 2 of Wands – 78 Tarot Nautical ~ Tarot of the Water

Artist: Jayde Hilliard

Website: JaydeHilliard.com

Keywords

Confidence, readiness, planning, decisions, progress

Artist Interpretation

“A boldly-colored kraken peers up from his underwater kingdom. He spies a ship that is his for the taking. Although he is already successful in his endeavors, as evident by the pearl wrapped up in his tentacle, he must decide how far he wants to expand his grasp on ruling the oceans. Should he stay beneath the water and rule where he is most familiarm, or rise to the surfact and rule the world above?

I wanted to push myself to mentally be in an ambitious state of mind as that is mostly what this card is about. I had to make some very important decisions to make sure I could successfully convey this card’s meaning.”

Card Meaning

In a sea teeming with fish, a huge kraken eyes a ship from below. He has the perfect vantage point from where he sits – between the pillars of an ancient ruined city, over which he appears to rule. A pearl is entwined within one of his tentacles – his endeavors so far have been successful. Now he needs to move on. Five of his tentacles are raised toward the ship, the red of this kraken lusts for adventure and to continue on his path, while two remain wrapped around the pillars, keeping him here for the time being.

This card represents the importance of making plans and acting on them. The fires of inspiration from the Ace of Wands have taken root, now is the time to build upon that momentum and turn these plans into reality.

Featured Card of the Day – 9 of Cups – 78 Tarot Carnival ~ Cirque du Tarot

Posted on Updated on

Artist: Marlon Teunissen

Website: DreamchaserGallery.com

Keywords

Achievement, happiness, wish fulfillment, rewards

Artist Statement

“The Nine of Cups is a card that stands for hopes and dreams, and is one of the most happy and positive cards present within the tarot deck. It means that your wishes will be fulfilled, that you are feeling satisfied and are content with your life. The cute female clown in the picture somewhat resembles the original and traditional character from the Nine of Cups card. They both wear red hats and blue/white striped clothing and both have blue curtains in the background. She has a happy expression on her face because she finally is able to ride a unicycle while balancng three plates with nine cups on them after a long time of practice. Finally her hard work has paid off and the spotlight is on her.”

Card Meaning

A clown sits on her unicycle, balancing three spinning plates in her hands and on her nose. This is no mean feat in and of itself, but on each of these plates sits three cups. She is so close to reaching perfection – these cups are stable, only one starts to fall. Her smile is wide though, her face happy and enthusiastic. She is not taking this as a setback, realizing that all her hard work and practice has paid off, this is just one tiny slip. She basks in the spotlight, her dreams have come true.

This card congratulates you for all that you have achieved and suggests you have all but completed your task and gained the happiness and contentment you seek. The only issues now are minor tweaks to the final outcome that you will be able to deal with very quickly, given all you’ve already learned.

Featured Card of the Day – 3 of Swords – 78 Tarot Nautical ~ Tarot of the Water

Posted on Updated on

Artist: Ash Evans

Website: AshEvans.com

Keywords

Sorrow, heartbreak, loss, betrayal

Artist Interpretation

“It was really important to me to make sure the appropriate emotion and symbolism was conveyed in my card. The Three of Swords is a powerful card. The original iconography depicts three swords piercing a heart in a stormy background. It conveys heartbreak, betrayal and deep sadness. There is a lonely air to it so I wanted to do something that was sunken deep into the bottom of the ocean. The background is murky and swirling to symbolize the turbulent time. Deep in the sea bathed in salt much like tears; the seahorses reflect silently, heads bowed. I wanted to make the heart a glittering jewel, like a long lost sunken treasure.”

Card Meaning

The heart is a fragile thing, illustrated as a precious gem to be treasured. But, this gem has been cast aside, has sunk to the bottom of a murky sea. Three swords hang behind it, threatening to pierce the heart, representing the power of cold logic to hurt us if not tempered by other emotions. Three seahorses, heads bowed, add to the mournful feel of this card. But, they are together, and faint glimmers of light can just be seen in the turbulent, grey sea, reminding us that pain is a part of life, but we move past it.

This card warns of loss, not a physical, material loss – but emotional or intellectual – heartbreak or betrayal. Tears will flow, but you will not break. You can use this pain as a catharsis, and speed up the healing process.

Featured Card of the Day – Page of Swords – 78 Tarot Carnival ~ Cirque du Tarot

Artist: Kiri Ostergaard Leonard

Website: KiriLeonard.com

Keywords

Eager, energetic, passionate, curious

Artist Statement

“The Page of Swords is a messenger of turbulent energy and enthusiasm. She is ready to begin whether it’s a new project, a new idea or just taking action. With her sword she cuts to the truth. She is inquisitive; she knows how to ask important questions but lacks perspective due to her youth. Her red sash symbolizes passion, bells ring in the wind, calling her to action; she needs an outlet for her ideas and feelings. Spirals symbolize surrendering to passion and inspiration. As the spiral moves out pent up energy is released. A shadow from turbulent clouds in the background crosses over her face. She can be a symbol of incoming conflict. She has the desire to prove herself, which can be a double-edged sword; she may consider herself superior to others because she lacks experience and wisdom – she does not yet have maturity to express herself in a constructive way.”

Card Meaning

A young carny holds a sword aloft, feet poised for action, ready not just to start a journey, but to rush forward, with all her energy, and sprint toward the goal. The way ahead is bright and inviting, but a dark shadow looms, warning of possible trouble ahead, but she takes no notice. Raring to go, tumultuous energy sparks and swirls around this impatient Page as she glances back, inviting you to join her.

With so much energy and passion at the start, the question is whether you can keep up this level of commitment to the end, and what you will encounter along the way. For now, though, this card is telling you to go with it – you might have a lot still to learn, but that can be done along the way.

Featured Card of the Day – 8 of Cups  – 78 Tarot Nautical ~ Tarot of the Water

Posted on Updated on

Artist: Mary Layton

Website: MaryLayton.net

Keywords

Cutting ties, making changes, abandonment, disappointment

Artist Interpretation

“The Eight of Cups represents a turning point, or change of heart. Generally, moving on from the past, or from an undesirable situation. Leaving behind past issues and searching for new beginnings. Perhaps the blonde mermaid sang an inspiring song, encouraging the man to leave behind a troubled past and embark on a search for a better future (and, in the process, she’ll gain some golden goblets to add to her stash of treasures). The card’s astrological associations are Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio – all water signs, which made it easy to fit them into the nautical theme. I’ve represented the signs in my painting by using the mermaid’s fish friends for Pisces, the crab in the mid-ground for Cancer, and I have depicted the constellation Scorpius in the night stars.”

Card Meaning

A lonely figure stands on the pier, walking away – leaving the lush sea in favor of a barren landscape. In the water a mermaid sings a song of inspiration to help him turn his back on the past and move on with his life. The mermaid revels in lost treasures of his past as he walks into the dark night. The moon creeps out to light his path, symbolizing the spiritual nature of his journey, but also that the reasons for this decision may not be as simple as they seem.

This card represents a sense of dissatisfaction tempting you to give it all up and walk away – often with a desire to discard material possessions in favor of a more spiritual contentment. It is time to consider what will bring you greater joy and fulfillment.

Featured Card of the Day – Death – 78 Tarot Carnival ~ Cirque du Tarot

Posted on Updated on

deathcarnival

Artist: Jasmine Becket-Griffith

Website: Strangeling.com

Keywords

Focused, calm, balanced, ready

Artist Statement

“I’ve given her a dark red dress (it kind of has a Masque of the Red Death feel to it). The background has an Italianate feel. The skeleton guy on the horse skeleton is based on a very old anatomy etching I came across. As it needed to encompass the Tarot Death card themes as well as the Carnival theme, there are small dancing masked figures or skeletons circling around her, and death on his skeletal horse in the distance. My Plague Doctor / Alchemist character (he appears in a lot of my works) is looming behind her.”

Card Meaning

A Venetian lady stands within a circle of masked figures and skeletons. Behind her looms a plague doctor, and she cradles the skull of a dead baby. Death rides past in the distance on his horse, idly watching the scene – a reminder that death cannot be defeated. The rich and poor, children, adults and the elderly, all will face him. But behind all this, dawn breaks, the sun rises on a new day purifying us all and bringing a fresh start.

Often mistaken for a harbinger of real death, this card more often symbolizes the end of something that has come to a natural close, and the rebirth that will inevitably follow. It is a hopeful card – with all endings there is sorrow, but also a chance to move on, begin again and transform into something positive.
