Artist’s Statement
“I am honored to present to you the Three of Swords. Last July (7/23/15) I was diagnosed with MS after countless tests. Figuring out why things hurt and what to do to alleviate the pain. Handling it is entirely up to me, the learning process is here for life. I feel like this card was picked for me as a lesson. I need to adjust to the challenges ahead and I’m sure they’re going to hurt a little. Pain lets you know you’re alive. It’s what you do with it that counts.”
Card Meaning
A sad clown rains scraps of blue paper over a suspended heart, pierced by three sharp, unforgiving swords. The heart is the center of our emotion; here it is skewered by the cold blades of logic, emphasizing the power that pure intellect has to wound, if not tempered with kindness and empathy. This sense of sadness, sorrow and loss is made worse by the ticker-tape rain that pours down upon it from an overturned bin adorned with storm clouds – the look on the clown’s face says it all.
This card heralds a heart-breaking period of time that we must endure, reminding us that it’s only through such turmoil that we learn, heal and grow. This is not a dark card; there is still light and hope, the card also serving to remind us that even sadness ends.
