Artist’s Interpretation and Card Meaning:
“I created the card Six of Pentacles. Although this is supposed to be typically a positive card, after viewing a few other cards for this one it is always the same, one person being shown in a superior position. Event though the woman in the boat is holding a rope for those in the water, there is a hangman’s noose attached. Yes, she will help them from the water, but at what cost? I have called this artwork: Careful what you wish for.”
A finely dressed woman sits in a boat, surounded by pentacles. Across her boat, an oar forms a balance, a cake on either side. Hands reach out of the lake towards her, and she drops a rope towards them. She is materially and physically safe, but here to help others, rather than home, reveling in her security. Whether her boat is big enough to take all that need her is unclear, the noose at the end of her rope suggests that there will not be help for all.
This card advises balance in material matters – when we give and receive, it benefits us all. But it also warns about the dangers of blindly giving, we should give only what is needed – food for the hungry, or other charity should always be a temporary solution.
