Deceit, betrayal, stealth, theft

Artist Statement

“I had a few ideas pop into my brainpan for my card, the Seven of Swords, that I quickly sketched out, but this image was the strongest in both possible imagery and card representation. It portrays the deceit and betrayal in the card meaning, the “thief” being the trainer. As he uses his swords (bullhooks) on the elephant, he steals the creature’s soul and basks in the power he thinks he wields in doing so behind closed doors (or closed curtains in this instance). But, an unnoticed young girl peeks through the tent curtain to discover the deception in this world, for all that fun and entertainment coming from the harshest of abuses and lies has now fallen upon innocent eyes. All of these aspects are reiterated by the irony of the signage, “The Greatest Place on Earth”; but at what cost?

Card Meaning

An elephant trainer walks away from his charge with five bullhooks in his arms. His sense of dominion is obvious on his face. In the leg of the poor animal we see two remaining hooks, which cripple the creature. As the trainer leaves he believes he is escaping the scene of his betrayal, but he has failed to notice a young girl who has found out. Sadly, she sees what has happened and her innocence is lost. Is it truly as the sign says? The greatest show on earth, and if so, at what cost?

This card is a warning against deception – no matter how tempting it may be to hide away, and deceive, truth will always come out – it’s better to face the truth, rather than have it come back and haunt you.
