Artist’s Statement
“In the earlier part of the 1900’s, individuals with a condition called microcephaly could occasionally be found in carnival freak shows. Some, like Pip and Flip, were loaned to circuses by families to get extra money during the depression.
Overall, the childlike innocent natures of the microcephalic performers won over audiences, and that sweet nature inspired my Lovers’ card. The Angel was inspired by Koo Koo, the Bird Girl. Born with Virchow-Seckel syndrome, she was actually rescued earlier in life from a mental institution, and performed well into the 60’s.”
Card Meaning
Two lovers leave the freak show together, happiness and contentment evident on their faces as they begin a journey. He gazes up towards the heavens, suggesting that their love is a deeply spiritual connection. She holds an apple in her hand, representing the purity of their partnership. But a serpent is draped around them, binding them in the shape of a heart. There will be trouble ahead, their relationship will face hardship and there may be tough choices to make, but they have decided to face these trials together, as equal partners,
This card suggests that in every relationship, whether it is a romantic attachment or good friendship, the partnership is affected by every choice made, and that we have to stay true to ourselves in order to withstand adversity.
