Impotence, fear, isolation
The Eight of Swords refers to people holding themselves back. The figurative bonds within this image, a blindfold and cage of swords, are easily escapable if you were to try. To fit in with the astral theme of this card, while portraying the main themes of the traditional card, I featured a blindfolded woman isolated and suspended in space, bound, only with golden threads that she could cut easily. The blindfold represents an inability to see a way out of the current situation.
Against the backdrop of space, she lingers, suspended. Braided, her hair is tied away from her and eight swords dangle from her hands. Nothing is holding her in place. She is blind-folded, but nothing holds her hands…they are tangled up with the gold threads that hold the swords, but it is nothing that she could not handle. She could escape and throw aside the swords, cast off the blindfold, and right herself. But she doesn’t.
When this card appears in a reading, it is asking you a question you may not like….Why are you holding yourself back? Why are you standing in your own way? You are a prisoner of your own making, letting your worries and doubts paralyze you, our fears making you feel powerless and trapped. But nothing truly holds you where you stand….you could remove the shackles.
You have all the power here. You don’t need to settle. You don’t need to accept the situation. Shake yourself free, and take charge of your own path. Even if it doesn’t feel like it right now – you can change the situation.
You are in control. Have faith in yourself, and believe that it’s possible.
