Artist Interpretation
For my interpretation I wanted to capture warmth and positive energy. “The Sun” represents vitality, success and happiness. I wanted to depict a female astronaut – strong and successful in her career and always looking upward to the stars. Her sun kissed brown skin is framed with intense white and yellow, and surrounded by a warm radiant glow of positivity. I’ve long been inspired by the concept of defying gravity, and underwater fashion photography so I wanted to create an illusion of this by having her hair appear weightless and flowing within her space helmet. Finally, as a final nod to the traditional depiction of “The Sun” tarot card, and to the “Space Race” of the 1960s and 70s, I added a sunflower detail to her cheek. This piece brought me much happiness and warmth as I created her, and I hope that this positive creative energy will transcend through this deck of Tarot.
Card Meaning
An astronaut basks in the light of the Sun after a successful mission, her face raised in joy. She herself is radiant, the light shining into and through her helmet to create a halo around her. Upon her cheek, a sunflower tattoo suggests this is her element, this is why she travelled into space.
