Artist’s Statement
“The Five of Wands sows strife, conflict, and disagreement, but a closer look shows competition as motivation, conflict as inspiration, and differing opinions as a way to open eyes to new methods. Hassles can be necessary for success, and different points of view can be combined for a whole that is stronger than its parts.
The figures in this card show different nationalities, hinting that there is a greater global balance at work. The five of wands reminds you that you can’t succeed without competing. You may feel like you are below others, but if you look around, you’ll find that other people look up to you the way hyou look up to others; you are part of a larger framework than you may realize.”
Card Meaning
In the circus, no group seems more together than the acrobats, every move reliant on actions of their fellows, though they are all trying to outdo each other. This paradox of competition and coordination is what makes their show so exciting. Will they fall? Will the ego of one cause all to fail? In a pyramid formation, they need every ounce of strength they can muster to stop them from falling and need t put their egos aside for the good of the group, no matter what.
This is a card of tension and chaos, petty squabbles that, if allowed to take over, form obstacles to success. Competition can make us stronger and inspire us to be better, but can also dissolve into conflict.
