Retreat, reflection, meditation
The Four of Swords is all about resting and reflecting between important tasks. I have chosen to illustrate an armored female figure resting motionlessly among the stars. The finished or lesser tasks are symbolically below/behind her. She remains at the ready to tackle a great task by the reaching of her hand to the great sword. Her cloak represents a reflecting mind, passing into lucidity with her life in relation to the rest of the universe by fading into star-stuff.
In the circle at the top part of the sword there are two prominent stars, one larger than the other. These represent important people that are in the care or heart of the central figure. Possibly a spouse and/or children.
A female knight lies in repose, the three swords of her fallen foes beneath her. Her face is relaxed, but even at rest, she is still ready to face imminent threats, her hand reaching out for her sword. She floats through the endless reaches of space, her cloak and the plume of her helmet rising above her, like dreams and thoughts that drift away, into the universe. Detritus, to be cast off as she prepares for the next challenge before her.
When this card appears in a reading, it is time for a different kind of challenge….to take a break! Even if your to do-list is full to bursting, you need to recharge, relax and refocus your energies. Take some time, and walk away, even if for a few minutes. There’s no point in diving back in until you do…you won’t make much progress till you have gathered the strength you need to continue.
Remember that self-care is essential – you need to make it part of your routine, or you will burn out. The time you spend resting now will be worth it later.
