THE CARD’S STORY BY: MOLLY HARRISON

My representation of this card of nostalgia and childhood happiness features the mythical Water Sprite. She is facing away, peering over her shoulder from her childlike friend in an attempt to be sure to focus on the future, not the past. Usually the characters in this card are represented facing each other, holding one of the cups. I chose to portray the scene a bit differently with the nostalgic one facing away from the small child who, below, looks up at her with curious innocence, perhaps gifting the beautiful, carefree energy of her childhood. The white starfish wrapped around the golden goblets represent the white flowers that are typically depicted in this card. The small elusive fish seen passing by, facing the opposite direction of the Water Sprite, represents the past being released.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

A young sprite desperately tries to get the attention of an older water sprite, to no avail. The adult is determinedly ignoring her younger self, unwilling to be dragged back into the past, no matter what it has to teach her. It’s important to live in the here and now, and not dwell too long on the past, but it can educate us. Spend a little time diving into your memories, and let them fill you with nostalgia and joy. Swim through your history, maybe dig through a box of photos, exploring a treasure trove of emotion. Let the good old days, the simplicity of childhood guide you to improve your future.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

WATER SPRITE

A sprite is an elemental spirit, generally fae in nature, and water sprites appear in a wide range of mythologies and folklore tales in diff erent forms. Th ey are oft en portrayed as beautiful and graceful, even fragile like the water nymphs or naiads of Greek mythology. Th ey are social creatures rather than loners, and harmless unless they are severely provoked. Th e social, almost familial nature of these creatures makes them an ideal image for this card.
