THE CARD’S STORY BY: JASMINE BECKET-GRIFFITH

Each card incorporates well-known gods/goddesses/ mythological figures – and since I have The Moon I want to evoke Luna/Selene in my piece. We are also supposed to reference traditional tarot imagery so our cards are recognizable to readers, and I’m incorporating a couple of wolves/dogs and the two pillars (as well as the crawdad) from the Rider-Waite deck, and as a nod to the early Flemish Tarot I’m giving the female figure a distaff (as in spinning wool) in her hand. I’m very excited at the unusual lighting source in this piece, with Luna/Selene being somewhat backlit with the beautiful crescent moon, and have worked out some dynamic shadows & highlights along with the colour scheme.

THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN

Selene stands before the moon, flickering fireflies floating around her. Behind lie shadows, two wolves snarling at each other across a river, and a crawdad crawling out of the river onto the bank. In the darkness, the simplest things can cast fearful shadows, a branch appearing as a skeletal hand, and it is then that you need to listen to your heart, when your senses can deceive. Listen now, to your intuition. Pay attention to that nagging feeling, telling you that something is not quite right. Things are going on that you’re not aware of, and it’s time to make sure you’re in possession of all the facts. It’s a good time to check that motives and intentions are true before you act.

MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

SELENE Selene is the personification of the Moon in Greek mythology, her Roman counterpart being Luna. Also the primary goddess of the Moon, she is known for driving a moon chariot across the galaxy and heavens, for being surrounded by stars and guiding her chariot through the night. With a skill for seeing through the darkness, and the feminine energy combined with the moon, Selene is an ideal characterisation of our Mythical Moon.
