It has only been two weeks since we have seen this card, but it definitely is a sign of the times. The world as a whole is in turmoil right now, as a pandemic ravages the planet and the war against it is being waged right outside your door. If ever there was a time for this card to be appropriate, this is it. Record unemployment also dominates the daily news cycle, with millions filing every week due to temporary and even permanent layoffs. Also in the news are the growing lines of cars, with people waiting to receive their 36-lb. box of staples from the Food Bank, to hopefully help feed their family for the coming month.
The 5 of Pentacles (Earth) is the one I always refer to as the “Hard Times” card, reflecting the current poverty which is becoming prevalent in these most uncertain of times. This is a card of lack, and it does not need to be just about money. These things tend to take a toll on one spiritually, when life seems to have taken a turn for the worse. This is all temporary, of course, but in this moment many are left feeling as though they do not know when or where their next meal will happen, while the farmers’ crops are rotting in the field. Humanity will never be the same from this experience.
