Apathy, distraction, daydreams, reverie
“The Four of Cups card stands for contemplation, apathy and missed opportunity. I placed the harlequin in the center of the card to symbolize his self-centered mediation. With his bored, annoyed almost, expression and repellent body language, he doesn’t pay attention to what’s going on around him and might miss important possibilities that are being offered to him. On the other hand, his absolute focus prevents him from being distracted and potentially misled.”
A harlequin clown sits alone in the darkness, gazing downward in contemplation. His expression is apathetic, almost bored, his posture is defensive, almost hostile, arms and legs crossed. He has distanced himself from all distractions, keeping everything and everyone out. All around him, hands reach out to him, offering cups of cheer. These cups, which feature the suits of playing cards symbolize the many different enticements that the outside world has to offer. But he is completely unaware of them, ignoring them and remaining focused only on his own thoughts.
This card heralds feelings of dissatisfaction, and the desire to look deep within yourself and re-evaluate, without being distracted by trivial matters – the need to make some meaningful changes. It also warns, however, against being so introspective that you end up oblivious to what is right there in front of you.
