Artist’s Statement
“After doing research into the King of Swords, and the visual cues the card uses to show those meanings, I found a few things. On my own, I tend to like to play with dramatic lighting. Also having the idea of the crown actually being composed of swords. I knew I needed a close up. I found that butterflies also can be a part of the card. Initially, there were going to be a variety of butterflies, but sometimes my brain actually works, and that enabled me to make the connection between Monarch (King) and the Monarch butterfly. To me, the card means strength, but a strength that comes from compassion. I hope my card conveys that.”
Card Meaning
Steel blue eyes flash as a bearded king stares intently, a sword in hand. He wears a mask, adorned with swords that form his crown, tips pointed up toward the clear blue sky, a symbol of his mental clarity and control. His presence fills our vision, his authority absolute, he is to be respected rather than feared. Fragile butterflies swarm safely around him, one hovering by his ear as though offering advice. These monarchs represent transformation, and suggest that while he is a rock of a man, solid and strong, he is revolutionized by intellectual argument.
This card is a symbol of intellectual power and mastery, representing a highly ethical, equitable man capable of weighing his decisions carefully and offering impartial judgment.
