Loss, grief, regret, choice
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
THE CARD’S STORY BY: REBECCA SINZ
I illustrated a gargoyle on a high pedestal, five cups worked into the architecture itself. Gargoyles served as water spouts on many buildings, so work well with the water element. Three fallen cups are in front of her spilling water over the edge, and two remaining cups stand beside her. Her pose is one of distress, in the background, a river dividing her from “home,” the castle. Also behind her is the bridge that could get her home if she could focus on anything but the spilled cups. I added storm clouds clearing to further illustrate the hope with the despair if you just look and see it.
THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN
A Gargoyle sits, contemplating her inner turmoil in familiar surroundings as the world goes by. She is broken and distraught, unable to face the world, and unable to drag herself to the safety of her castle. Loss and regret have hit you hard, you need time to heal before you can move on. Let tears flow for now, knowing happiness and joy will return to your life in time. You may not see it now, but when you are ready, you will. In the meantime, take care of yourself and look for small joys when possible.
MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: GARGOYLE
The term gargoyle originates from the French legend of La Gargouille, a grotesque dragon who terrorized Rouen. They are carved into the architecture for the practical purpose of draining water away, but also served to scare the local peasants into the sanctuary of the church, as they showed the “evil” living outside. The way in which the gargoyles drain away water – in the five of cups, the tears of the grief-stricken made it an appropriate figure for this card.
